- Weave compression tool
Weave compression tool
Designed to correct loose or uneven weaving that occurs lower down in a basket. Traditionally, a bodkin is inserted into the weave and struck with a rapping iron, working row by row to compress the weaving and level the basket.
The Weave Compression Tool was developed as a purpose-made alternative. Its tapered, flat blade slips easily into the weave without a sharp point, while the broader contact surface spreads the load more evenly, reducing marking and giving greater control.
Made from high-quality virgin steel and designed to withstand repeated blows from a rapping iron. It can also be used to open up space beneath a border or wale when fitting leather handles.
Developed by Rachel Hutton in collaboration with toolmaker Dave Budd.
To use: insert the tool low down at the point where compression is needed and strike it with the back of a rapping iron. Work around the basket, moving row by row upwards until the weave is compressed and level.
